Museum Studies

Museum Studies Program

If you’ve ever walked through a museum and felt inspired, you’re not alone. Today’s museum professionals are creative problem-solvers who bring history, culture, and ideas to life. At the IU School of Liberal Arts Museum Studies program, you become more than just a curator of artifacts. You become a storyteller who connects people to the past, present, and future.

In our program, you’ll join a thriving community of remarkable museum practitioners, scholars, and students whose collaborative civic work truly makes a difference throughout Indianapolis, the country, and the world.

Indianapolis is a city filled with world-class museums , including Newfields, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and the Eiteljorg Museum, which enables you to be immersed in real museum work from your very first semester. Your coursework will be interdisciplinary and practical, helping you build the skills and confidence to shape your own museum career.

You can focus your course of study on a particular specialty, such as interpretation and evaluation, collections care and management, or museums and descendant communities. Or, you can take a range of courses to develop the generalist knowledge and skills required in a small museum. You can also take elective courses from at least eight different areas across campus. Your program will be uniquely yours.

Launch your career with a lifelong network

Internships are the cornerstone of your museum studies program experience, thanks to generous opportunities from our partner institutions.

You can choose to intern with one of our partner institutions or in any museum in the world that meets the requirements of the learning experience. During your internship, you will apply your skills, creativity, and passions in real museum settings. You’ll integrate and apply what you’ve learned, test your vocational interests, develop professional connections, and gain valuable experience for your resume.

After graduation, your network grows with you. Whether you pursue museum education, visitor engagement, collections, management, or digital strategy, you'll stay connected to your cohort, mentors, and a broad alumni community who will stay invested in your continued success and welcome you as a future mentor.
